# Fabric Warehouse - Placeholder values

**Applies to**
Platform: Fabric Warehouse

Fabric Warehouse placeholder values name the warehouses, schemas, Key Vault and lakehouse that a Fabric Warehouse project uses. Enter them in `replacement_config.json` before you run `replace_placeholders.ps1`. Afterwards the notebooks and the deployment pipeline contain your names.

The replacement itself is described in [Replace the placeholders in the artifacts](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/replace-the-placeholders-in-the-artifacts?hsLang=en). The values apply to all Fabric Warehouse generator configurations, including Dimensional and Dimensional and Mart.

### Variable names

Each variable name has the form `<project>#<group>#<variable>`, with the project name in lower case. The group is a layer or a source system:

- Layers: `stage`, `store` (Data Store), `rawvault` and `businessvault` (Data Vault), `cleanse` and `core` (Dimensional), and `mart`.
- Source systems: the source system name in lower case without spaces. The layers of an imported linked project appear as source systems under their linked name.

The load control variables use `loadcontrol#loadcontrol#<variable>`.

### Layers and source systems

Each layer and each source system has two variables.

#### database\_name

The warehouse of the layer. The generated file presets `warehouse`. For a source system, the warehouse or lakehouse that holds the source tables, for example the lakehouse with the shortcuts from [Fabric Warehouse - Target environment](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/fabric-warehouse-target-environment?hsLang=en).

#### schema\_name

The schema of the layer or of the source tables. The generated file leaves it empty; fill in a schema for every layer and source system. The deployment creates missing layer schemas. For source tables in a lakehouse without schemas, enter `dbo`.

### Load control

The load notebook reads three secrets from the Key Vault and connects to the warehouse as the service principal they belong to.

#### key\_vault\_name

The name of the Key Vault that holds the secrets, as created in [Fabric Warehouse - Target environment](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/fabric-warehouse-target-environment?hsLang=en).

#### key\_vault\_tenant\_id\_secret\_name

The name of the secret with the tenant ID, `tenant-id` in the example setup.

#### key\_vault\_client\_id\_secret\_name

The name of the secret with the client ID of the service principal, `client-id` in the example setup.

#### key\_vault\_client\_secret\_secret\_name

The name of the secret with the client secret, `client-secret` in the example setup.

#### warehouse\_server\_address

The SQL connection string of the warehouse, for example `<server>.datawarehouse.fabric.microsoft.com`. To copy it in Fabric:

1. Open your workspace.
2. In the context menu of the warehouse, choose **Settings**.
   ![Context menu of the warehouse docu\_bgwarehouse in the workspace with Settings highlighted](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Mar-10-2026-03-07-34-5804-PM.png?width=452&height=322&name=image-png-Mar-10-2026-03-07-34-5804-PM.png)
3. Open the **SQL endpoint** tab and copy the **SQL connection string**.
   ![SQL endpoint tab of the warehouse settings with the copy button of the SQL connection string highlighted](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Mar-10-2026-03-08-31-0480-PM.png?width=640&height=241&name=image-png-Mar-10-2026-03-08-31-0480-PM.png)

#### Load control database\_name and schema\_name

The lakehouse and schema of the execution log. The generated file presets the lakehouse `datalakehouse` and leaves the schema empty:

- Lakehouse without schemas: leave `schema_name` empty. The replacement removes the empty schema together with its dot.
- Lakehouse with schemas: enter the schema, for example `dbo`. The default lakehouse of the load control notebooks must then also have schemas, see [Fabric Warehouse - Deployment](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/fabric-warehouse-deployment?hsLang=en).

#### execution\_log\_table\_name

The name of the execution log table, `execution_log` by default.

#### application\_name

A name that the load notebook writes to every row of the execution log, so that you can find the rows of this project. The generated file leaves it empty.

#### application\_environment\_name

The environment name that the load notebook writes to every row of the execution log, for example development or production. It is `DEV` by default.

### Example

The Data Store project `test.datastore.fabricwh` deploys its Stage layer to the warehouse `warehouse` with the example schema `stage`. Its execution log goes to the lakehouse `datalakehouse`, which has no schemas:

```
{ "name": "test.datastore.fabricwh#stage#database_name",
  "value": "warehouse", "secretname": "" },
{ "name": "test.datastore.fabricwh#stage#schema_name",
  "value": "stage", "secretname": "" },
{ "name": "loadcontrol#loadcontrol#database_name",
  "value": "datalakehouse", "secretname": "" },
{ "name": "loadcontrol#loadcontrol#schema_name",
  "value": "", "secretname": "" }
```

After the replacement, the Stage cells start with `USE [warehouse];` and create their tables in the schema `stage`. The load control deployment notebook creates the log as ``datalakehouse`.`execution_log``.

Example files of Generator 2.4:

- [Data Store](https://f926da42ec3845beb4acf72f.blob.core.windows.net/hubspotknowledgebase/replacement_config_Fabric_Warehouse_DataStore_2.4.json)
- [Dimensional](https://f926da42ec3845beb4acf72f.blob.core.windows.net/hubspotknowledgebase/replacement_config_Fabric_Warehouse_Dimensional_2.4.json), similar for Dimensional and Mart
- [DataVault and Mart](https://f926da42ec3845beb4acf72f.blob.core.windows.net/hubspotknowledgebase/replacement_config_Fabric_Warehouse_DVDM_2.4.json), similar for the DataVault and Data Mart configurations
