# Fabric Warehouse - Dimensional and Mart

**Applies to**
Platform: Fabric Warehouse
Architecture: Dimensional · Data Mart

Fabric Warehouse - Dimensional and Mart generates a Stage, a Core and a Mart for Fabric Warehouse as T-SQL notebooks with a notebook load control. Select the Generator Configuration `Fabric Warehouse Dimensional & Mart` when you add a project whose dimensional model and marts run in a Fabric Warehouse. This article lists what the configuration supports and where it differs from [Microsoft SQL Server - Dimensional and Mart](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/microsoft-sql-server-dimensional-and-mart-2.0?hsLang=en).

[Mart Hierarchy Flatten](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/create-a-mart-hierachy-flatten?hsLang=en) is not supported on Fabric Warehouse and is missing from the model object list below. For a model object of this type, validation reports warning `ID-35003`: "Fabric Warehouse uses Synapse SQL, which currently does not support the required recursive common table expressions."

### Scope and output

- Platform: Microsoft Fabric Warehouse. The configuration is available since Generator 2.2.
- Dataflow Modeling columns: Source; Stage in the Bronze column; Entity, Fact and Core Composite in the Silver column Dimensional; the Mart model objects in the Gold column Datamart. See [Understand the Layering concept](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/understand-the-layering-concept?hsLang=en).
- Deployment layers: Stage, Cleanse, Core and Mart. Cleanse holds the source, deduplication and data quality objects of Entity, Fact and Core Composite; Core holds their tables, loaders and result views.
- Output: T-SQL deployment notebooks, a deployment pipeline definition and Python load control notebooks, described in [Fabric Warehouse - Artifacts](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/fabric-warehouse-artifacts-2.0?hsLang=en).

### Prerequisites

- A Fabric workspace with a warehouse for the target layers. The deployment scripts switch to the existing database with `USE` and create missing schemas; they create no database.
- A lakehouse for the load control execution log. The load control deployment notebook creates the log as a Delta table there.
- An Azure Key Vault with the tenant ID, client ID and client secret of a service principal. The load control notebook uses them to connect to the warehouse.

A setup example is in [Fabric Warehouse - Target environment](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/fabric-warehouse-target-environment?hsLang=en). Each layer has its own placeholders `<project name>#<layer>#database_name` and `<project name>#<layer>#schema_name`, where `<layer>` is `stage`, `cleanse`, `core` or `mart`. The generated `replacement_config.json` presets the database names to `warehouse`. The load control placeholders are listed in [Fabric Warehouse - Placeholder values](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/fabric-warehouse-placeholder-values-2.0?hsLang=en).

### Sources and linked projects

Stage source views read each source table by its three-part name `[<database>].[<schema>].[<table>]`. The source system has the type `Microsoft Fabric Warehouse`, and its database and schema names are placeholders. Discovery types are listed in [Source Systems per Generator Configurations](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/source-systems-per-generator-configurations?hsLang=en).

You can [import a linked project](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/import-a-project-to-be-used-as-a-linked-project?hsLang=en) as a source and [export this project as a linked project](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/export-a-project-to-be-used-as-linked-project?hsLang=en). The model objects read from these sources:

- Entity, Fact and Core Composite: Stage, Core Composite, or a [Store Entity](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/create-a-store-entity?hsLang=en) of a linked Data Store project
- Mart Dimension, Mart Fact and Mart Composite: Entity, Fact, Mart Composite, or a Store Entity of a linked Data Store project
- Mart Out: the Mart model objects

Relationships of an Entity or a Fact point to an Entity, and relationships of a Mart Fact point to a Mart Dimension.

### Supported model objects

#### Source and Stage

- [Source](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/create-a-source?hsLang=en)
- [Stage](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/create-a-stage?hsLang=en)

#### Core

- [Entity](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/create-an-entity?hsLang=en)
- [Fact](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/create-a-fact?hsLang=en)
- [Core Composite](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/create-a-core-composite?hsLang=en)

#### Mart

- [Mart Dimension](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/create-a-mart-dimension?hsLang=en)
- [Mart Fact](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/create-a-mart-fact?hsLang=en)

- [Mart Out](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/create-a-mart-out?hsLang=en)

Implementation Type offers these values:

- Entity: `Permanent`; Mart Dimension: `Permanent` (default) or `Cached`
- Fact and Mart Fact: `FactLoadStrategy`
- Core Composite, Mart Composite and Mart Out: `Virtual` (default) or `Cached`
- Stage: `Cached` (default) or `Virtual`

### Capabilities and limitations

- Keys: an Entity or Mart Dimension table has a primary key on its surrogate key and a unique constraint on its business key terms. A Fact or Mart Fact table has no primary key. All constraints are created as `NONCLUSTERED` and `NOT ENFORCED`.
- Foreign keys: [Foreign Key Mode](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/foreign-key-mode-model-object?hsLang=en) on Entity, Fact and Mart Fact offers `None` and `Create Disabled`, and the default is `Create Disabled`. `Create Disabled` creates the foreign key as `NOT ENFORCED`; `None` creates no constraint. `Create Enforced` is not available.
- Indexes: index management is not available, and the generated tables have no indexes.
- Identity values: the tables have no `IDENTITY` columns. The loaders compute the surrogate keys of Entity ([BG\_Entity\_Identity](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/bg_entity_identity?hsLang=en)) and Mart Dimension ([BG\_MartDimension\_Identity](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/bg_martdimension_identity?hsLang=en)) as the current maximum in the target plus `ROW_NUMBER()`, inside their transaction. `BG_ID` and `BG_DataQuality_ID` get their values the same way.
- Unknown member: the deployment adds a row with the surrogate key `-1` to each Entity and Mart Dimension table when the row is missing. [Custom Singleton Values](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/custom-singleton-values-model-object?hsLang=en) sets its values.
- Data quality: Entity and Fact support [data quality rules](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/understand-data-quality-rules-overview?hsLang=en).
- Deployment: a deployment notebook holds at most the number of objects set in [Notebook Deployment Objects Limit](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/notebook-deployment-objects-limit-project?hsLang=en); further objects go to the next notebook. The pipeline definition runs the load control deployment first, then the deployment notebooks in order. See [Fabric Warehouse - Deployment](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/fabric-warehouse-deployment-2.0?hsLang=en).
- Loading: [LoadControl Options](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/loadcontrol-options-project?hsLang=en) offers only `Multi-Threading Notebook`, a Python notebook that runs the loaders in dependency order. See [Fabric Warehouse - Load data - Native Load Control](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/fabric-warehouse-load-data-native-load-control-2.0?hsLang=en).
- Data types: validation reports warning `ID-35000` when the length, precision or scale of a term does not fit its Fabric Warehouse data type. Warning `ID-35001` flags a business key term of type `varchar(max)` or `varbinary(max)`, because constraints on it could block the deployment.

### Project properties

The configuration offers these project properties, with their defaults:

- [Hash Algorithm](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/hash-algorithm-project?hsLang=en): `SHA1`; also `SHA2_256` and `MD5`

- [Deployment Options](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/deployment-options-project?hsLang=en): `Generate Drop Table Statements`

### Platform differences

The table compares the configuration with Microsoft SQL Server - Dimensional and Mart of the same release:

| Item | Fabric Warehouse | Microsoft SQL Server |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Timestamp Default Terms | `datetime2(6)` | `datetimeoffset` |
| Hash Default Terms | `varbinary(20)` | `binary(20)` |
| Text Default Terms | `varchar` | `nvarchar` |
| Surrogate key column | `INT`, set by the loader | `INT IDENTITY` |
| Persist Validity default | on | off |
| Enforced foreign keys | not available | available |
| Index management | not available | available |
| Artifact Output Mode | not available | available |
| Target Object Comment Type | not available | available |

LoadControl Options offers `Multi-Threading Notebook` on Fabric Warehouse and `Native Load Control` or `Airflow` on Microsoft SQL Server. Notebook Deployment Objects Limit exists only on Fabric Warehouse.

These Default Terms belong to each group:

- Timestamps: `BG_LoadTimestamp`, `BG_UpdateTimestamp`, `BG_ValidFromTimestamp`, `BG_ValidToTimestamp`, `BG_EffectiveTimestamp`
- Row hashes: `BG_RowHash`, `BG_RowHashScd1`, `BG_RowHashScd2`
- Text, same lengths on both platforms: `BG_SourceSystem`, `BG_DataflowName`, `BG_DataflowSetName`, `BG_ErrorDescription`, `BG_IncrementLoadStatus`

### Example

A Fact `fk_disabled_fa` has a relationship to the Entity `common_loyaltycard_scd1` and keeps the default Foreign Key Mode `Create Disabled`. It generates this table and foreign key in the Core layer. The excerpt shows the example schema `core` in place of the placeholder and adds line breaks:

```
CREATE TABLE [core].[COR_F_fk_disabled_fa] (
     [BG_LoadTimestamp] DATETIME2(6) NOT NULL
    ,[BG_SourceSystem] VARCHAR(255) NULL
    ,[common_loyaltycard_scd1_common_loyaltycard_scd1_SK] INT NOT NULL
    ,[QUANTITY] DECIMAL(18,3) NOT NULL
    ,[TRANSACTION_ID] INT NOT NULL
    ,[TRANSACTION_LINE_NO] INT NOT NULL
)
;
ALTER TABLE [core].[COR_F_fk_disabled_fa]
ADD CONSTRAINT
[FK_COR_F_fk_disabled_fa_COR_EN_common_loyaltycard_scd1_common_loyaltycard_scd1]
    FOREIGN KEY ([common_loyaltycard_scd1_common_loyaltycard_scd1_SK])
    REFERENCES [core].[COR_EN_common_loyaltycard_scd1]
    ([common_loyaltycard_scd1_SK]) NOT ENFORCED;
```

The table has no primary key. The foreign key column holds the surrogate key of the Entity ([BG\_Fact\_ForeignKey\_Identity](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/bg_fact_foreignkey_identity?hsLang=en)). With Foreign Key Mode `None`, the `ALTER TABLE` statement is not generated. On Microsoft SQL Server, the same Fact gets a nonclustered index on the foreign key column.

### Release differences

Project Settings shows the Generator Version of your project.

- Generator 2.2: first release of the configuration.
- Generator 2.3: the model object property Custom Singleton Values on Entity and Mart Dimension.
