# Add an Index

### Add an Index

To create a new Index for a model object, access the [**Indexes overview**](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/understand-indexes-overview?hsLang=en) page for a model object:

In the left menu, choose the target object that gets the index.

The **New Index** side panel is opened:

Fill in the following information:

1. **Index Name**: the name of the index in the database. The generator uses it unchanged.
2. **Index Type**: choose the Index type. Microsoft SQL Server offers four types, Oracle two:

     - Microsoft SQL Server, **Clustered Rowstore Index**: sorts the table rows by the index columns. A table has at most one clustered index.
     - Microsoft SQL Server, **Non-clustered Rowstore Index**: a separate index on the index columns. A table can have several.
     - Microsoft SQL Server, **Clustered Columnstore Index**: stores the whole table in columnar format. A table has at most one clustered index and one columnstore index.
     - Microsoft SQL Server, **Non-clustered Columnstore Index**: a columnar index on the included columns. A table has at most one columnstore index.
     - Oracle: **B-Tree Index** and **Bitmap Index**.

3. **Create as Unique Index**: the database rejects duplicate values in the index columns. For Clustered Rowstore and Non-clustered Rowstore Index, and for the B-Tree Index on Oracle.
4. **Included Columns**: non-key columns, added with **Add Term**. Optional for the Non-clustered Rowstore Index; required for the Non-clustered Columnstore Index, where they are the columns of the index.
5. **Index Columns**: the key columns. Add each with **Add Term** and choose its sort order, `ASC` (default) or `DESC`; a Bitmap Index takes them without sort order. Required for Clustered Rowstore and Non-clustered Rowstore Index, and for both Oracle types.
6. **Create as local Index** and **Tablespace Index**: Oracle only, for both types. Tablespace Index is in the group Technology.

The generator adds custom indexes to the default indexes, unless you switch to Only Custom Indexes, see [Understand Indexes overview](https://knowledge.bigenius-x.com/understand-indexes-overview?hsLang=en).

Then click on the **SAVE** button:

- The new Index appears:

- A notification confirms the correct creation:

### Example

Two Mart Facts on Microsoft SQL Server have one custom index of each type. The deployment creates these statements, with the schema placeholder replaced by `mart`:

CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX [ix_doc_unique_clustered]
  ON [mart].[DM_MF_cust_index_without_default_indexes]
  ([common_pos_common_POS_SK] ASC,[BG_LoadTimestamp] DESC);
CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [ix_doc_nonclustered_include]
  ON [mart].[DM_MF_cust_index_without_default_indexes]
  ([SALES_PRICE] DESC) INCLUDE ([QUANTITY],[SALES_AMOUNT]);
CREATE NONCLUSTERED COLUMNSTORE INDEX [ix_doc_nonclustered_columnstore]
  ON [mart].[DM_MF_cust_index_without_default_indexes]
  ([SALES_PRICE],[QUANTITY],[SALES_AMOUNT]);
CREATE CLUSTERED COLUMNSTORE INDEX [ix_doc_clustered_columnstore]
  ON [mart].[DM_MF_load_insert_without_effective_timestamp];
```
